Lakes Entrance Golf Club
Course Report
June 2022
Rainfall: 36.5mm (26/5/22 to 22/6/22)
Year to Date: 432mm
Greens :
The cold weather has certainly taken affect in the past few weeks with the growth rate on the greens all but coming to a stop. We have now reduced greens mowing to once a week on a Wednesday morning and rolling will continue on Thursdays and Saturdays when conditions allow.
The winter disease prevention program has begun on the greens with fungicide applications applied on a monthly basis through the cooler months. The normal applications of fertilizer have been reduced. Nitrogen based diseases are the main concern at this time of year so keeping the fertilizer levels at a minimum will aid in disease prevention and hopefully reduce our requirements for fungicide.
A light top dress of sand has been applied to the 9th green to rectify some small depressions from the past few months. When the weather allows the 1st green will also receive a light top dress.
Over the past 2 weeks there has been an increase in unrepaired pitch marks on greens. Just a reminder to everyone to please remember to fix your pitch marks to keep the course is tip top condition though the cooler months.
Fairways/Tees/Surrounds/Rough:
Currently the fairways and tees are holding up well however the soil moisture levels are quite high resulting in a large amount of worm castings to appear on the fairways and surrounds. The course staff will be doing our best to remove these worm castings however I expect they while be quite prevalent during the coming months.
Over the coming weeks some more signs and ropes will be positioned around the course to assist with damage caused by foot and cart traffic. As per usual at this time of year it would be much appreciated if everyone in a cart could do their best to avoid wet or muddy areas, so we do not see a decline in turf condition.
Irrigation:
The irrigation upgrade is continuing to move along at a solid pace. All the greens have now had new valves installed and the new pipe work and sprinklers have been installed on greens 9 and 11. We encounted a small hiccup in the process of installing the new pipe work with the course sod cutter breaking down the morning of the install. This resulted in the turf not being able to be lifted and replaced which has left a trench line around the two greens. This trench will grow over in due course and shouldn’t cause any disruption to play. Thanks to Dave Smythe for volunteering his time to help with the installation.
New valves have now been installed to all tees except holes 13 and 9 which I am expecting to be completed in the coming days. The install of the new valves to the fairways will commence in the next week or so and hopefully be completed as soon as possible.
Misc.
I received a question recently regarding the changing of pin positions each week. Due to the workload of installing the irrigation system and staff being on annual leave, we have reduced changing holes and raking bunkers back to once a week for the near future. Once spring comes around again and stage 1 of the irrigation upgrade is completed, we will commence changing holes Wednesday and Friday mornings once more.
Bernie Cornell and Peter Kane are continuing their work on the 17th tee bank which is nearing completion. Once the final shape has been completed, the area will be seeded and once grown in will be maintained the same as the other tee banks on the course. Thank you to Bernie, Peter and Dave Murrell for tackling this task.
In recent weeks the course staff has begun some tree work when time allows. Currently we are focusing on the removal of dead trees which are causing a hazard by dropping branches. Over the remaining cooler months, we will be continuing to remove a number of dead/ dangerous trees and tree limbs along with lifting a number of thick areas to assist with speed of play.

Lakes Entrance Golf Club
Course Report February 2022
Rainfall: 29mm (26/1/22 to 18/2/22)
Greens:
During the period of no water supply last month, the greens and surrounds sustained considerable heat damage and stress. They are currently recovering well with areas on the 3rd and 6th hole re-turfing and various areas requiring re-seeding. Over the coming weeks myself and the course staff will continue working through re-turfing and re-seeding areas around the course.
A slow release fertilser has been applied to the worst affected greens to give them a boost in growth over the next few weeks. Gypsum has also been applied to some greens to help deal with the build up of sodium in the soil.
Tees/Fairways/Surrounds:
Currently everything is holding up well, some dryness is starting to appear in areas with sandy soil.
Irrigation:
The irrigation system is continuing to take up a lot of my time through these weeks of dry weather. Over the past month we have been fixing multiple leaks around the course and replacing sprinklers almost on a daily basis. Hopefully the weather will settle down over the next few months allowing us to get on top of a few irrigation maintenance items.

2022 Gippsland Senior Classic 09/02/22
We had a very special day putting on the Classic to over 100 visitors to our
course, with some very pleasing emails sent to us commenting on our
beautiful course. Many positive comments in the club house after play.
Just wanted to congratulate you and the team at Lakes for a great event. It was very obvious that the whole club supported the day and pitched in to help. I look forward to next year’s event. Regards Keith
Thank you for a well run tournament for the old buggers. Your staff and volunteers were most
welcoming and the golf course in top presentation. I have never played either of the courses but
envisage returning and staying longer next time, cheers Terry and my lovely wife Dale.
Loved the course & played well on Monday - sadly my form disappeared on Tuesday; I look forward to returning and playing it again. Best regards Rob
Thank you for your email, what a wonderful prize, I’ll certainly look forward to using it. I would just like to let you know that the course was in great condition and the ladies I played with remarked how much they enjoyed the day. A big thanks must go to all the ladies who welcomed us all and made sure we knew what was going on. Thank you for putting on the event. See you soon, Angie
Your team of volunteers did a magnificent job with providing us all with a wonderful experience
playing at Lakes and I will definitely be using this gift to come back and play the course again. Thank you once again Regards Ravi
I would like to thank you and your committee on going out of your way to make the day a great
success. All the volunteers did a great job. Wishing your Club all the best for the year in 2022 Cheers Alison

Dear Members,
Just a brief update on what’s been happening and upcoming events around your club in the not too distant future.
Our new golf fixture book will be available at the club no later than the end of next week. Later than usual as the printers lost 5 days due to Dan’s latest lock down.
Events that were cancelled during the last lock down are being re-scheduled to try and create some semblance of normalcy, to that end please find the following dates to look out for.:
The Men’s cancelled monthly medal 13th Feb, is now rescheduled to Saturday 27th, this event will be a stableford Monthly Medal off the white tees for something different, allowing all full members to participate.
The Ladies President & Captains day that was cancelled last Monday will now be played on Monday March the 15th.
The extract below is from the new book showing early March events.
The upgrade of the tees has been put back a week also due to Dan’s diligence, On the 22nd of February we will be upgrading the 1st, 7th, 8th and 17th tees, these tees will be partially demolished and new sculpture tees will be built in their place. Temporary tees will be in place, so please be patient as there will only be a 4 week period that these tees will be out of action.
We are desperately seeking volunteers for help around the course and also Ladies to help with catering for our many functions, of which we generally get 1 weeks’ notice. If you would like to help out and have a spare couple of hours please contact Garry Jeal our course director 0448 105 593 or Vernone our manager 5155 1431.
With the sad news of Ellen passing we are unfortunately forced into recruiting an extra person to cover the staff shortage, if you know of anyone looking for a job, please let Vernone or myself know.
Happy golfing

Dear Members,
My apologies for no newsletters being sent out recently, but I will endeavour to keep you up to date with news and goings on around the club.
The new deck is progressing, we have engaged the services of Development Solutions in Bairnsdale to submit planning and building permit applications for the construction of the new deck, all being well we hope to construct this deck in August 2021, just in time for our spring tournament. Along with the deck we will be renovating the golf shop entrance with an automatic sliding door and rebuilt the adjacent veranda, also upgrading the disabled toilet, all to be freshly painted.
On the 17th of February we will be upgrading the 1st, 7th, 8th and 17th tees, these tees will be partially demolished and new sculpture tees will be built in their place. It is the intention of the board to replace all of the tees over the next 4 years. Brad Marsden and Mark Chatfield will oversee the rebuild; Brad is a relatively new member but comes with a wealth of experience, being a former golf club employee of Morayu, the Lakes Golf Course Sydney and just recently the Superintendant of the Kings Cove. Temporary tees will be in place, so please be patient as there will only be a 4 week period that these tees will be out of action.
I have been in discussion with Chris Munday and Sue Wilson regarding the upcoming Golf East Gippsland open day on the 1st of March, these temporary tees should cause little or no disruption to the event and the Ladies will be quite please to tee off the 1st on the other side of the creek.
The Ladies events on Wednesdays will now start from the 1st and 5th tees, this will allow Mark and his merry men to mow and roll the greens on Wednesday mornings in front of the field, meaning the Ladies will have the best playing conditions of the week, freshly rolled greens will make them the envy of east gippsland. Mark will also be performing the same function of Fridays.
Our course will be closed on Saturday the 20th of March as we are hosting the Victorian Mens and Women’s 36 hole Mid- Amateur Championships, the second day of this event will be held in Bairnsdale but our course is also designated to be closed on the following day, but this is dependent on the numbers of Vic Amateur players.
We are desperately seeking volunteers for help around the course and also Ladies to help with catering for our many functions, of which we generally get 1 weeks notice. If you would like to help out and have a spare couple of hours please contact Garry Jeal our course director 0448 105 593 or Vernone our manager 5155 1431.
The 2021 fixture book has been sent to the printers, so should be available in a few days. Hope you like the colour.
We have had a visit from Peter Wood the Travelling Golfer, his company promote tours for globetrotting golfers, but they are now more interested in golf tours within Australia, Peter has created a video for his website of our golf course, it’s worth a view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rGJP6euOAg,T
There is also write up on Peter’s website which you will need to cut and paste into your browser as it is a secure connection.
https://www.thetravellinggolfer.com.au/course-report/lakes-entrance-gc
I would personally like to thank Ron Baldock and Rick Morgan, they performed an invaluable service to the club, refuelling and cleaning the carts over the hectic holiday period and during the year in general. Well done boys.
Hope to see you all soon

Hi All
Just a quick note re next Saturday. Members Xmas break up day.
4 Ball Medley Ambrose, arrive at 10 o'clock for 10:30 shotgun start. Get a team organised now, as slots are limited in Ourgolf booking software. Please bring a plate of food to share.
As per last year, each player has 1 mulligan on the front nine, and 1 on the back nine to be used at will.
A mulligan is a stroke in golf that is played from the same spot that a player hit their previous stroke, looking to re-play the prior shot without penalty. In other words, golfers use mulligans to wipe out the previous shot and consider it to have never counted. It's a re-play.
All board event trophies will be presented after the comp, so everyone is present and we can applaud the winners.
The club will provide a certain amount of food, but it would be appreciated if members would supplement the tables.
We are allowed around 100 members in the clubhouse, socially distancing of course, but it will be spread around the 2 function rooms and the bar.
Hope you all enjoy the day. Unfortunately I am required in Melbourne on the day and have no chance to defend the mulligan cup.
